Starting work in a Japanese company as a foreign new graduate
can be confusing – especially in the first few months.
Here are some points to consider:
- “Unclear Instructions” Are Normal
You might hear things like:
- “Please do it nicely.”
- “Use your judgment.”
In many Japanese companies, thinking first before asking is often expected.
This doesnt mean you shouldnt ask questions but timing and effort matter.
- Your Attitude Matters More Than Skills (At First)
In your first year, managers often focus on:
- Whether you greet people properly.
- Whether you take notes.
- How you report mistakes.
- Whether you try, even when unsure.
Praise is rare but when you hear “I can trust you with this”, take that as a big compliment.
- From “The Foreign Employee” to “You”
At first, you`re seen as “the foreign new hire.” Over time, through small consistent actions,
you become “someone reliable.”
Remember that trust in Japan is built quietly and slowly, not through big self-promotion.

A Message to International Freshmen:
- You don`t need to be perfect.
- You don
t need perfect Japanese. Just dont stop learning. - You don`t need all the answers.
Just remember:
- Don`t disappear when things are hard.
- Don`t stay silent when confused. Ask for help/guidance.
- Don`t carry everything alone. Teamwork is what Japanese value.
If you follow these steps, your first year will change you – in a good way.
